Playwriting Workshop
August 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 & September 5
Instructor: Peter Spiro
A Practical, Hands-On Workshop
Columbia Center for the Arts invites you to participate in a playwriting workshop taught by Peter Spiro.
Spiro’s resume is rich and long, having written many plays that were produced in New York City and Los Angeles.
What You Will Learn
In this practical playwriting workshop, Peter Spiro will teach participants how to write, read, and study the craft of playwriting using plays of various genres.
- The focus of the workshop will be to learn the differences between plays and stories, the unique character of dramatic conflict and dramatic tension as it applies to the stage.
- Participants will learn how to plan and structure plays of any length, from skits to full-length plays, and offer scripts to the workshop for discussion and evaluation.
- A short reading list of six contemporary plays will be used to guide the process.
Spiro suggests
that this workshop will appeal to both actors and directors who work
at Columbia Center for the Arts, who want to better understand the dramatic
action upon which a play is built —and as a result, participants will
be able to better understand why a play is a play and not a staged story
on its feet.
Registration and Additional Details
The workshop will be limited to 8 people, so be sure to sign-up early.
- The workshop takes place over six Sundays: August 1,8,15,22,29 and September 5 from 11-2pm.
