Animal Essences: Portraits and Artistic Interpretations opens on First Friday, May 6, 2011, at the Columbia Art Gallery and extends through May 29. The public is invited to the artist reception on Friday, May 6 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
The works displayed will depict familiar animals, both domestic and wild, in iconic and characteristic poses and settings – horses, salmon, waterfowl, shorebirds, songbirds, butterflies, buffalo, moose, seals and more.
The images will primarily be representational but the show includes abstract and fantastical portraits as well.

Participating Artists
The eight participating artists work in a broad array of media, including both two dimensional and three dimensional, with some artists doing both, as follows:
- Ian Beyer, Springfield – metal sculptures, especially from “found objects”
- Andrei Engelman, Portland – oil and mixed media paintings
- Robynn Fulfs, North Plains – hand built ceramic pieces for wall and table
- Victor Guschov, Tigard – watercolor, oil and graphite paintings
- Andy Nichols, The Dalles – blown glass creations
- Steve Stegall, Mt. Hood – ivory and stone sculptures and jewelry
- Jeff Stewart, Dufur – wood, stone and bronze sculptures, oil paintings
- Bill Sturman, Mt. Hood – watercolor paintings, stone sculptures
Best of Show Award
There will be an award presented at the end of the month to the artist whose piece is judged the “Best of Show” by a People's Choice ballot. So, when viewing the show, visitors are encouraged to vote for their favorite work.
