More About the Show and Events

Marion McNew

Designing landscapes is as much about following objective, clearly defined design guidelines as it is about drawing on the landscape artist’s inspiration and experience.

Marion McNew of Mount Hood Gardens, Inc. was born and raised in Northern Germany. She traveled extensively across Europe before moving to Hood River in 1984. She has visited numerous gardens across the United States and in England. Marion utilizes her experiences and skills to create functioning, preferably sustainable and low-maintenance gardens, tailored to the conditions in the Columbia River Gorge.

Viewing landscape design as art acknowledges the influence of the designer’s life journey, historic gardens, paintings and other art on his or her work. Additionally, writings of other designers and viewing their gardens can also play a role in shaping the landscape designer’s inspirations and ideas.

Master Gardener Tour

June 13 — Visit Seven "Secret" Gardens in Hood River & White Salmon

Secret Gardens is the theme for the upcoming Garden Tour presented by the Central Gorge Master Gardener Association. This tour of seven gardens in Hood River, OR, and White Salmon, WA, will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2009 from 10 AM to 4 PM.

This is the first time that Central Gorge Master Gardeners have chosen gardens on both sides of the Columbia River to be featured on their biennial Garden Tour. Each of these gardens was chosen for their unique qualities and features that keep them hidden in plain sight.

The decision to also include the “Art in the Garden” show at the Columbia Center for the Arts is due to a heightened interest by gardeners of all abilities to feature art in their garden design. The inclusion of the art show is another first for the Garden Tour and is an exciting addition for participants of the Secret Garden Tour.

Tickets

Tickets are $7 in advance and available at Waucoma Book Store, Columbia Art Gallery and Good News Gardening in Hood River as well as Trellis Fresh Flowers in White Salmon, or $10 at any garden location on the day of the tour.

The Secret Garden Tour is a community outreach and education event that also helps to raise funds for Central Gorge Master Gardener Association projects that serve the communities of the Central Gorge.
