About the Play
Vivian Bearing, Ph.D., a renowned professor of English, has been diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. In this extraordinary play, she comes to reasses her life and her work with a profundity and humor that are transformative both for her and the audience.
The Characters
VIVIAN BEARING, Ph.D: (forties-fifties) Professor of 17th century poetry at the university; academic, superior intelligence; strong understanding of wit and subtle comedy; passionate and demanding role (on stage through the entire play); must be completely bald for the production and must be comfortable with brief nudity.
HARVEY KELEKIAN, M.D./Mr. BEARING: (fifties) Chief of medical oncology, University Hospital, professional and clinical attitude with an underplayed but sincere compassion; Vivian’s counterpart in the medical/scientific world/Vivian’s father (at her age 5).
JASON POSNER, M.D.: (twenties) Clinical fellow, Medical Oncology Branch, very thorough and dispassionate researches/student; driven by the research and results; a bit cocky with a nice guy lurking about now and then.
SUSIE MONAHAN, R.N., B.S.N: (twenties) Primary nurse, Cancer Inpatient Unit; opposite of Jason, very human character, compassionate, natural intelligence, enjoys and respects life and spontaneity.
E.M. ASHFORD, D.Phil.: (fifties – eighties) Professor emerita of English literature; Vivian’s mentor, tough and fair; never confuses her research with her life.
LAB TECHS/CLINICAL FELLOWS/STUDENTS/CODE TEAM: (twenties – thirties) and ensemble of four, male and female, to play a number of smaller, featured, integral roles throughout the story.
