About Hood River Reads
The second annual Hood River Reads is here. This year the Friends of the Hood River County Library is again sponsoring this project to engage the whole county in reading and discussing books. Gonzales and Daughter Trucking Company, by Maria Amparo Escandon, is the book that has been chosen for adults (see below for a brief summary).
Ms. Escandon will be in Hood River April 12th-14th. Check with the Hood River County Library for exact dates and times of scheduled events. Books will be distributed at a March 3rd kick-off in the Library park and will be offered for sale at Waucoma Bookstore.
Book clubs in the area might want to consider reading Gonzales and Daughter Trucking Company for their discussions in March.
About this Year's Book
From the author of Esperanza's Box of Saints (1999) comes the story of Libertad Gonzales, a young woman imprisoned in the Mexicali Penal Institute for Women. Libertad decides to establish a weekly Library Club where she reads aloud the classics to her fellow inmates. As she turns the pages randomly we soon realize that she is really telling her life story, one chapter at a time. And what a life she has led -- in the cab of an 18-wheeler with her father, criss-crossing the country. Libertad's audience grows hooked on this story which has everything: tragedy, humor, joy... it is all there"
